Todd Akin and Legitimate Rape
"In an effort to explain his stance on abortion,
Representative Todd Akin, the Republican Senate nominee from Missouri, provoked
ire across the political spectrum on Sunday by saying that in instances of what
he called “legitimate rape,” women’s bodies somehow blocked an unwanted
pregnancy" (Eligon and Schwirtz, 2012).
It has been a long time since Americans were as disgusted
and appalled by another human being. Todd Akin's statement is both
disrespectful to victims of rape and humans in general. To think that a heinous
crime such as rape can have a positive attribute is a prime example of
extremist logic.
It is sicking to think someone can be this
heartless and cold to the realities of rape and rape culture in this country.
This is a complete lapse of good judgment and is very unbecoming of someone
vying for political office. If this is Akins true view of the world, he should
not be in a position to influence decisions that affect the lives of Americans.
This is America and in this country, you say what you want
and feel, just be prepared for the backlash. Whether positive or negative.
